Description
dislaimer: the cake design is based on the GazettE's 'Beautiful Deformity' album artwork. The original design belongs to the GazettE, Sony Music Records Japan and JPU Records. it was a fanart cake, made purely for my masochistic pleasure and not for sale.
the design: many times I read how bakers see the world in a cake and I always found it exaggerated. but when I saw anouncement about release of new album by the GazettE (japanese visual kei band) one of my first thoughts was 'it looks like a cake waiting to be made!'. the idea behind the album was to achieve band's integral sound without losing unique characteristics of each member. thus the album artwork features five different animals that are still recognizable even after being merged into one creature
the cake: free-hand sculpted chocolate mudcake with layers of caramel cream, covered in white chocolate ganache and fondant/modeling chocolate mix
the process: it was my first ever mudcake! it turned out to be a great choice for a sculpted cake, it's very dense so I didn't need any internal structure. also I wanted to do as much sculpting as possible with actual cake, instead of making huge fondant topper and I doubt it would be possible with sponge or even velvet type. so after sculpting I covered it with ganache, than added some details in white modeling chocolate (nose, tip of the beak, tip of the horn, lips) then covered it all with fondant/modeling chocolate mix. I did it in sections, starting with flat parts of the base and then the sculpted parts one by one. I was able to get seamless connections between the parts thanks to adding modeling chocolate to the fondant.
...
edit:
JPU Records posted on my facebook profile comment ''Wow, great work!!" under this picture. I'm so happy they liked it! it seems they are not gonna sue me for copyrights as I was worried when posting!
...
